Changes

I had to delete and re-create the "Rat Bones & Roses" section of Luna Crafts. For some reason it wasn't allowing me to edit the section, so I just started over. I also updated the image a bit and have offered a version on black on some products.

Tarot Ornaments

Just in time for the holidays, I have designed 22 oval ornaments. Each ornmanet features an original collage illustrating one card of the major arcana of the ancient Tarot. The collages were originally produced on index cards using photographs, magazine pages, and printed images. They were then scanned into the computer and sized for the ornaments. The number of the card and its title were added at this time.

If you study (or collect) each of the ornaments you will see that almost every single design features a butterfly or moth. I chose this as a running theme because the story of the Tarot is that of a person's journey toward enlightenment and the challenges s/he meets along the way. This seemed to relate to the metamorphic transformation of the butterfly or moth when I was designing the images.

If you like the images but are unfamiliar with the Tarot, I have included brief descriptions of the meanings at Luna Crafts.

Kitty Pirate

So this is the "Kitty Pirate" design. I tried to imagine what Luna would want as a flag if she went on a pillaging spree. And here it is. Smilling cat skull above two catnip mice, tails crossed. Luna loves her catnip mice. :)
I opted to do this design in color for several reasons, the biggest being, they are cool colors darnit! Plus I think it stands out from the various pirate themed items out there in that it features full color and catnip mice. :)

I hope that if you opt to let your freak flag fly, this be it. Enjoy! Posted by Picasa

Luna Crafts Logo

This is the full color logo for Luna Crafts. It is a stylized luna moth before a lavender moon. The luna moth is my absolute favorite moth in the whole world. It is also one of the most important symbols in my life, and the name of our girl kitty. :) Her real name may be Luna Moth, but she is more commonly called "Luna," Luna Belle," "Baby Goddess," or "NO!" :D

Anyway, while this image may be my logo, I hope you can also appreciate it for what it is, an attractive image of a beautiful piece of the natural world. Posted by Picasa

Praying Mantis

This one is a favorite of my husband. The Praying Mantis is one of the most beautiful and fascinating insects in our world. They live only one season and grow from a nymph that is about 1/4" long to anywhere from 4 to 7 inches long depending on the species. Their strike is so fast that it cannot be seen by the human eye. They are capable of catching and consuming prey that is as big, and sometimes bigger, then they are. The Chinese Praying Mantis was introduced to this country in the 1800s and is a non-threatening invasive species. Meaning it's introduction did nothing to upset the ecology of the region it was introduced into. And yes, the females often consume their mates in order to better their chances of a successful breeding.

This particular design is based on a praying mantis I raised several years ago. She had hatched from an egg sack I had purchased from a beneficial bug dealer. I caught her in the garden after approximately three moults. She was just about 3/4" long when I set her up in a terrarium in our living room. For the first several weeks she ate fruit flies that I had encouraged to populate a piece of rotting fruit. Once she was large enough I graduated her to crickets that I would purchase from a local pet supply store. She could eat several in a few days. We named her Lavender and she loved the small lavender plant I had put in her terrarium. For a long time I had one of her sheddings, but we have since moved and I have lost it.

Lavender lived in our home from June until November, when her cycle ended. The short life span is very sad when one has grown attached. But I did truly enjoy the time we had together. I drew this portrait of her as a memorial of that time. And also to remind my customers that beauty can be found anywhere.

SMILE

SMILE! is, I admit it, one of the girliest of my designs. I know it's overloaded with pink (as is this blog come to think of it) and the ratties are pretty darned cute aren't they? :) Anyway, this design is based on something my Gram always told me growing up. "Smile. It comforts your friends and confounds your enemies." It drove me NUTS when she would say that when I was a kid, but now I can recognize the wisdom of it.

The ratties are Tara (left) and Willow (right). They were beige hooded sisters that I absolutely adored beyond words. Sweet, adventurous and wonderful girls.

Rats, by the way, make wonderful pets!

Rat Bones and Roses

This is one of my newest and most popular designs. I call it, oh so originally, "Rat Bones and Roses."

This design was inspired by a project I partook after my last pet rat, Cordelia, passed away last year. I decided, after much soul searching, that I would articulate her skeleton. And I did, which is another story.

This image is not actually Cordelia, but it's definately a fellow rattus norvegicus and I added the roses because I truly love ratties. I also think skeletons are beautiful. This image is not about being grusome, but about the timelessness of love. Although if you like it because it's morbid, that's cool too. ;)

New Blog for Luna Crafts

Welcome to the blog for Luna Crafts. Here I will be able to describe and explain the designs more completely than in the store. Also if you have questions, comments, suggestions or just want to talk, you can respond to any of the posts. :)

Some background...Luna Crafts was created several years ago as a way to showcase some designs I had come up with that were completely devoted to my cat, Luna Moth. Many of those original designs have been retired and I have branched out to designing based on whatever strikes my fancy. Obviously, animals and insects strike my fancy. ;)

I'll be adding the designs and descriptions soon. In the mean time, please go to Luna Crafts and look around. I firmly believe you'll find something you like. New stuff being added all the time.
